The Abandoned Thing Project (Mini Brief)
Developed as an example to my students, The Abandoned Thing is a Project that looks at the idea of developing an environment showcasing something once loved that has since been abandoned or forgotten. An area of interest that adds narrative to a location within a game or project. In this case, this is quite literal as the vehicle is an old client piece that fell through and was lost in my folders for years, contained in a ZIP folder it prompted me to re-kindle the car and create a scene that reflected the brief and the models history/narrative.
This brief can be a good skill set and portfolio builder and I encourage you all to have a go.

Abandoned Thing Brief
This brief was developed as a skill set building exercise, it allows you to explore and develop your traditional and digital skills, and has been designed to be completed over the course of 1 week, in this time you should accumulate a range of research, develop ideas, generate rough designs and produce a final image or moving sequence in any visualisation medium, from traditional pencil renderings through to inking, painting or even digital 2D or 3D.
In this context, Abandonment is defined as:
- Something that is left without the needed protection or care.
- Something left by its owner.
- Something that has been given up on.
While researching you may also wish to look at other areas of interest that will aid in informing your designs, concept art, and set designs are great for this as they will assist with your creativity and imagination, helping to broaden your influences.
You are to develop a visualisation of an item once loved that has since been abandoned or forgotten about, consider the purpose of your design choises, in a game setting this could be for any number of reasons (Point of Interest, special pick-up, the location of a base etc.), you will engage in a wide array of research (photographs, books, film, video, concept art, set design), then produce no less then 30 thumbnail concepts before refining your final design and moving onto production.
Your Abandoned Thing project can be set in any period, for any genre, real or fantasy based, and in any condition, but it must look like an abandoned thing!
