Their Pride and Joy (Mini Brief)
Developed as an example to my students, Their Pride and Joy Project looks at the idea of developing an environment with narrative, addressing the idea of character design without the character in scene. In this example I created a scene depicting a son and his farther building a Soap Box Racer in their Garage. The mix of tools and toys scattered around illustrate two personalities are involved with this space and show a relationship.
Alternatively, I could have added a level of decay/damage/dirt to the Soap Box Car and pushed it into the background, then brought the main car more into shot, potentially showing a project abandoned after the death of a parent.
This brief can be a good skill set builder and I encourage you all to have a go.

Their Pride and Joy Brief
This brief was originally developed by Gareth
Sleightholme as a skill set building exercise. The initial idea behind this is (as stated by Gareth Sleightholme) that
a room left pristine and clean like a showroom will never look as interesting to an observer’s eye as one left in disarray
This exercise asks you to develop either, a Visual (or set of visuals), A Concept Illustration or perhaps a 3D Digital Model, or even a Physical Model of one of the following 3 scenarios:
The side door of a dwelling, with a door/entrance open and partial view of the interior. Outside the door is a medium to large boat/water based vehicle on a trailer, the vehicle is under repair, or being loaded for a trip and is surrounded by parts/items/boxes/kit etc. A pet sits in/on the vehicle waiting for its owner to return.
The interior of a garage, with a door/entrance open and partial view of the exterior. Dominating the scene is a wheeled vehicle, which is under repair/abandoned and in a state of disrepair/piled high with kit for a trip; and is surrounded by parts/items/boxes/kit etc. A pet sits in/on the vehicle waiting for its owner to return.
The interior or immediate exterior of an aircraft hanger, with a door/entrance open and partial view of the interior/exterior. The focus of our attention is an antiquated flying vehicle which is under repair, or being loaded for a trip and is surrounded by parts/items/boxes/kit etc. A pet sits in/on or close to the vehicle waiting for its owner to return.
While researching you may also wish to look at other areas of interest that will aid in informing your designs, concept art, and set designs are great for this as they will assist with your creativity and imagination, helping to broaden your influences.
You are to develop a visualisation of one of the above listed scenarios, consider the purpose of your design choises, in a game setting this could be for any number of reasons (Point of Interest, the location of a base, save point etc.), you will engage in a wide array of research (photographs, books, film, video, concept art, set design), then produce no less then 30 thumbnail concepts before refining your final design and moving onto production.
Your Pride and Joy Project can be set in any period, for any genre, real or fantasy based, and in any condition, and you can adapt the brief slightly but it must depict the initial concept asked for.
